What Is Special Olympics Pennsylvania? Special Olympics Berks County offers year-round training and competition in eight Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disability. Both children and adults, men and women, boys and girls, train in bowling, roller skating, volleyball, floor hockey, basketball, aquatics, softball and track & field. Several new sports may be offered during the current program year. Special Olympics Berks County is a non-profit organization who relies upon individual and corporate contributions as well as their own fund raising endeavors to support all program expenses. There is never any charge to program participants for any aspect of this program - equipment, facilities, uniforms, travel expenses, etc. are all provided by Special Olympics Berks County. Totally a volunteer organization, Special Olympics Berks County depends upon the time and talents of interested individuals to meet the varied needs of this organization. All sports are conducted under the direction of the rules of the national governing body for that sport. Special Olympics Inc. has also provided additional adaptive guidelines in each sport for individuals of lower ability levels. Special Olympics athletes compete against individuals of similar ability levels in all competitions. Special Olympics offers every individual the opportunity to not only develop athletic skills but to build their self-esteem, to achieve, to build relationships. Special Olympics is often a "bridge" between individuals with intellectual disability and the communities in which they reside. Through Special Olympics, individuals gain acceptance in community sports programs and activities. Special Olympics emphasizes the abilities of the individual - not the disabilities!! Before the start of every Special Olympics competition, Special Olympics athletes recite the oath - "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt!"Thanks to your support, Special Olympics Berks County athletes can continue to repeat those words with pride. |
