I wanted to report to you how Special Olympics Berks County did this year at the Summer Games. The games were held June 6 to June 9th at beautiful Penn State University. We took 80 athletes and over 25 coaches who participated in Basketball, Softball, Bowling, Aquatics and Athletics. It is such a wonderful uplifting experience to spend those days at Penn State. They are so nice to the athletes and treat us so well, it is always a pleasure to go there. The Summer Games is an experience I wish everyone could share one time, this is all it would take to get a person involved with Special Olympics, it is 4 days of continuous action and every night there is something special for the athletes, again it is just a wonderful experience. Berks this year harvested 42 total medals, including 21 golds. The varsity basketball team which has now moved up to Division 2 from Division 3 a year ago took a strong 4th place and we expect even better things next year. The JV Basketball teams took a participation medal ribbon for 6th place and the 3 on 3 team took a bronze medal. The softball team also moved up to a tougher bracket and they also took a fifth place ribbon home with them. In Aquatics where we were only allowed to bring 5 athletes based on the constraints on the amount of athletes in that sport we took home 5 medals. In Athletics we took home 33 total medals including 17 gold medals. Included in those gold medals was the Division 1 gold medal in the pentathlon the highest division in Special Olympics and in Bowling we took home 2 gold medals. In the following pages you will be able to see the many activities our athletes were involved in from the opening ceremonies to the different sports to the closing ceremonies and the victory dance. We hope you enjoy it all.
