(Norristown, PA, September 19, 2005) Deb DeMarco, an active team member from Special Olympics Berks County was recently honored by Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) by being named Management Team Member of the Year (Non-Manager).   DeMarco is among the 18 individuals, groups and organizations recognized for their outstanding contributions to the statewide program at SOPA’s 2005 Leadership Awards Banquet, which took place on September 17 at the Harrisburg Hilton.

DeMarco has served on a number of committees and sports teams in an array of roles, including a chairperson for Special Olympics Berks County Family Committee, serving on the county’s Public Relations committee, and as a mentor for the Athlete Rep Committee and Athlete Representative.  She is also a Global Messenger coach for the Outreach Committee.  A full-time mother with two jobs, DeMarco is able to promote Special Olympics in her everyday life and is an outspoken advocate for Special Olympics Berks County.  In addition, she often looks into and researches other Special Olympics while on vacation, and will be visiting Special Olympics groups while in Ireland.

“Deb is a role model in terms of volunteers,” said Janine Cesare, president, SOPA.  “She is always first in line to step up to the plate when an emergency breaks and offers her services to fill that void.  She is an advocate for Special Olympics Berks County and speaks daily to community members in order to promote our mission, which extends Special Olympics reach through a true grassroots campaign. ”

SOPA Leadership Award recipients were chosen by a statewide panel of business and community leaders representing both the private and nonprofit sectors.  Nominations come from local Special Olympics programs throughout Pennsylvania.

The event is part of a yearly Leadership Conference designed to provide ongoing training and recognition for Special Olympics athletes and volunteers.
